Your child's first dental visit: what to expect

Aim for the first birthday, or when the first tooth appears. Here is how to make it easy.

Your child's first dental visit: what to expect

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by age one. At that stage it is mostly a conversation: how to brush, what to feed, and what is normal for teething.

How to prepare

Keep the language positive. Say the dentist will count their teeth, not that it will not hurt. Bring a favourite toy and book a morning slot when children are rested.

What we do

We let children sit in the chair, hold the mirror and choose the flavour of toothpaste before anyone touches a tooth.
