How often do you really need a cleaning?
Every six months is a good default, but some mouths need more and a few need less.
Most adults do well with a professional cleaning every six months. People with gum disease, diabetes, a history of cavities or who smoke often benefit from every three or four months, because plaque hardens into tartar faster than a toothbrush can remove it.
What changes the answer
Your hygienist looks at gum pocket depth, bleeding and how quickly tartar builds up. If everything is stable for two years, we may suggest spacing visits out. Ask at your next appointment.
The cost of waiting
Gum disease is painless until it is advanced. A cleaning is the cheapest way to catch it early.
